The city is surrounded on three sides by hills and Belfast Castle stands overlooking the city and has fine views across the harbor and docklands. To the north of the city is the town of CarrickFergus with one of the finest Castles on the Island of Ireland. South of the centre the town of Hillsborough has magnificent Georgian Buildings and a well preserved Garrison. Nearby towns such as Lisburn have many reminders of industrial past when Belfast was not only the main Shipbuilding centre for the British Empire but also Linen for the soldiers.
